To Make A Long Story Short

Last week my mom decided we should go to the Old Mill section of Pigeon Forge, and I was okay with that because I really love neat places and where I live there’s lots and lots of neat places including the Old Mill section. So when we were down there, I noticed a shop I never noticed the last time we were there before, and it’s called Long Story Short.

Now don’t get thinking that just because it’s in a touristy part of Pigeon Forge that it’s probably just got touristy things in it because it doesn’t have just that. It has a lot of great stuff and I mean stuff like really superly old books and other collectables.

When we went inside I felt like we were stepping through a portal into another dimension.  It was kind of like that old-fashioned television show where the man in the black suit says you’ve stepped into another dimension of time and space, or something like that.  Anyway, it was like time traveling.

Most important of all for me was all the books in the store.  They were really old books, and every single book was different.  It wasn’t like a big chain book store where they have bunches of the same book in the stock room in the back and a few on the shelves.  This shop has only one old book of every kind it has on their shelves.  If you want it, you better buy it before somebody else buys it and they don’t have it anymore.  Some of them are ancient texts (I heard that used in a movie when the characters were talking about a superly important book) and cost a lot of money.  Some of them are ancient texts that don’t cost too much.

Know what else I found in Long Story Short?  I found the ancestor of computers.  It’s called a typewriter, and my Grandpa Barrett still has a old one you don’t even have to plug in to make it work.  You just slip the paper in it like for this one I found at the shop, and you make sure the ribbon inside is good to go, and then you type on the keyboard like on a computer except you have to have crazy strong fingers to make the hammers (that’s what my grandpa calls them) strike the page (he says that part, too).  All of your fingers have to be the same kind of crazy strongness or else some of the letters are dark and some of them are not so dark.

Also in the background of this picture is a telephone booth from England from when my two grandmas and two grandpas were as old as Josh and Aaron and me.  That’s the red box behind everything, and you should go see what they did with it because it’s not just a telephone booth anymore (except there’s still a telephone inside of it).

In case you’re wondering where this shop is, it’s at 3336 Old Mill Street, just across from the Smoky Mountain Cat House (also one of my favorite places to go shopping because of Sali Dali Cat and Oreo Speedwagon) and down the street from the Old Mill Restaurant.   That means it’s easy to find.  You need to go there soon but if you go, try to go on not a busy tourist parking day because you might maybe have trouble finding a parking spot.

Anyway, one more thing I have to tell you to make a long story short (get the pun?) and that’s I really like that they put a blackboard where a mirror used to be in this frame, and I agree a bazillion percent with what got written.  I just love this place because it’s a lot like what goes on inside my head sometimes, and how cool is that?

By the way, did you see the rotary dial payphone (my mom told me that’s what that is)?  My mom told me some very funny stories about payphones from when she was as old as Josh.  I think maybe I shouldn’t tell Josh any of them, but I’m going to ask my Grandpa Two Rivers if my mom’s being a fooler girl, or if the stories she told me are true.  If they’re true, then I think maybe she can’t get so upset with Josh when he does some of the stuff he does.  Except probably she still is going to get upset because that’s what moms do sometimes.  It’s their job so kids don’t make humongous mistakes growing up.

So like I said before, you need to go to Long Story Short and see how awesome it is because I’m pretty sure you’re going to love it the minute you step into that new dimension of time and space.
